How to Create an Estimate or Proposal Using Your 3D Floor Plan

With Houzz Pro, you can quickly turn your detailed 3D floor plan into an estimate or proposal to share with clients. Converting your floor plan to a document saves you time and increases efficiency – it avoids double entry on work you've already completed.

To start creating your estimate (for builders) or proposal (for designers), open up the relevant 3D floor plan, or create a new floor plan from scratch. Click the Estimate or Proposal icon from the menu in the right panel.

By default, Houzz Pro will automatically generate a list in the right panel of all the items used in your 3D floor plan. You have two options – you can either use and edit that auto-generated list, or if you prefer, you can click Create from Scratch to build your estimate or proposal manually.

Auto-Generated Estimate or Proposal Overview

With the auto-generated estimate or proposal, Houzz Pro does the work for you by building out an item list based on what you already created in your 3D floor plan. You can easily change the list view to only see the information you need.

If you have multiple levels in your floor plan, you can change the floor dropdown at the top of the page to view the estimate or proposal details for a ground floor, basement, first floor or more.

Select Collapse All to minimise all the specific items and only view the main estimate or proposal topics. You can also minimise a specific topic by clicking the ^ icon next to the topic.

Edit Auto-Generated Items in Estimate or Proposal

The auto-generated estimate or proposal allows you to easily view, edit or delete a specific item. You are not able to add a new item directly from the document – to do this, you will need to edit the 3D floor plan directly.

Deselect or select a checkbox if you would like to include or exclude it from your estimate or proposal. Click the three dots icon next to the item to Remove an item or Edit Item Details.

In the Edit Item Details screen, you can adjust the item name, add notes, and include a waste percentage to ensure you have enough materials. Adding a percentage here will add to the total quantity included in the estimate or proposal. Be sure to click Save once you make changes.

Please Note: Some of the item information is read-only. If you would like to edit description, quantity or unit type, you will need to do this directly on the 3D floor plan.

Edit, Add or Remove Items in Floor Plan

If you would like to make changes to item quantity, add a new item, or remove an item, you can make changes directly in both the 2D and 3D floor plan.

To start, click on the floor plan item you would like to change, add or remove. In the right panel, make the necessary adjustments to materials, colours, dimensions or quantity. Any changes you make to item details will reflect in your floor plan and automatically update your auto-generated estimate or proposal details.

At the bottom of the right panel, click Remove Item from Estimate/Proposal if you want to remove an item that's already added. If you would like to add a new item that's not already included, click Add Item to Estimate/Proposal. Any changes you make here will automatically update your auto-generated document details.

Estimate or Proposal from Scratch Overview

With a manual estimate or proposal, you have complete control over what you include in your document. To start, click Create from Scratch at the top of your estimate or proposal. Your item list will start out empty, as shown below. To build out your list, you will need to manually click each item in the 2D or 3D floor plan and add it to your document.

Add Items in Floor Plan

For each item, click on the item in your floor plan to review the item details. In the right panel, make the necessary adjustments to materials, colours, dimensions or quantity.

Once you are ready to add the item to your document, click Add Item to Estimate/Proposal at the bottom of the right panel. If you want to remove an item you already added, click Remove Item from Estimate/Proposal.

Please Note: When you add flooring to your estimate or proposal, you can select whether you add both the floor area and/or the perimeter area to your document.

As you add items, you want to think about all the components of the room to ensure everything is included in your estimate or proposal. This includes:

  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Walls
  • Ceilings
  • Flooring
  • Cabinets
  • Products (furniture, decor, fixtures)

If you have multiple floors in your 3D floor plan, be sure to add items from all available floors.

Edit Items in Manual Estimate or Proposal

After you manually add items from your floor plan to your estimate or proposal, you will start to see all the items reflected in your document in the right panel.

If you have multiple levels in your floor plan, you can change the floor dropdown at the top of the page to view the document details for a ground floor, basement, first floor or more.

Select Collapse All to minimise all the specific items and only view the main estimate or proposal topics. You can also minimise a specific topic level by clicking the ^ icon next to the topic.

Within the document, you can easily view, edit or delete a specific item. You are not able to add a new item directly from the estimate or proposal – to do this, you will need to edit the 3D floor plan directly.

Deselect or select a checkbox if you would like to include or exclude that item or topic from your document. Click the three dots icon next to the item to Remove an item or Edit Item Details.

In the Edit Item Details screen, you can adjust the item name, add notes, and include a waste percentage to ensure you have enough materials. Adding a percentage here will add to the total quantity included in the document. Be sure to click Save once you make changes.

Please Note: Some of the item information is read-only. If you would like to edit description, quantity or unit type, you will need to do this directly on the 3D floor plan.

Preview and Create Estimate or Proposal

Once your auto-generated or manual document is ready, click Preview Estimate/Proposal at the bottom of the list. A new screen will appear that summarises all your items. If you have multiple floors and would like to include all floors in your summary, turn on the Combine Items Across Floors toggle.

Review the list, and if everything looks good, click Create Estimate/Proposal.

Your floor plan will then be converted to an estimate or proposal document, where you can continue to make adjustments as needed. From here, you can add a payment schedule, send to your client and more. Read How to Create an Estimate or How to Create a Proposal to learn more about document capabilities.
